Resilience is about being able to overcome the unexpected. Sustainability is about survival. the goal of resilience is to thrive ~ Jamais Cascio
One of the core threads of the Off-Grid Festival is the commitment to skill-sharing, particularly practically applicable skills and techniques. Brought to you by the Association of Resilient Living, the Off Grid Resilience College is our much loved 12 module program for ‘resilient living’ and is supported by activities in the Resilience Village.
Below is a taste of what to expect from the ‘Resilience Village’:
WildWoods & Wild Kids– A place to let out your wild side and play
Nourish Program– Nourishing workshops and activities
Village Green– Hands-on activities and demonstrations to learn practical craft and technology skills, as well as a place to meet project and campaign organisations.
Marketplace– A place to meet traders, find out about their enterprises and craft, and an opportunity to trade.
Do you have a skill to share? A craft to teach? Get in touch with ideas of how you could participate in this year’s gathering.
Technology has limited use unless we understand how it works and what it is. In an ideal world, technology can be repaired by ourselves, or by others in our community we trust. Here at Off-Grid we explore the realms of small-scale (even micro-), DIY and appropriate technology.
Complementing the technology are the ancient and traditional crafts of our land. From blacksmithing to bronze working; willow-weaving to thatching; hurdle-making to stone carving, artisan crafts are an important part of our emergent culture. These and many more have featured at Off-Grid across the years.
Another key element of our programme has been eco-build skills – sharing the skills and practices that we need to build our own homes, greenhouses, shelters and other structures. This can from the most simple bushcraft shelter through to straw bale, cob or timber-frame homes. Over the years we’ve had it all.
Living on the land and from the land also takes another set of skills. The skills of food production, nature awareness, foraging and medicine making. The skills of the pioneer in new territory. All can be found at Off-Grid.
Another core skill often missed in our fast-paced society is our ability to be personally resilient, from understanding ourselves, learning how to manage our own wellbeing to how to communicate and reflect on the world around us.
