Rising Up! offers an introductory workshop that covers the basics of Rising Up! itself, the importance of movement care, how to become more engaged and find solutions to the crisis we are in. We will also discuss the research that has been done to get us to where we are now, the methods and the strategy of how to effectively create change, the different roles and forms direct action can take and why it is not only important but also “The most fun and meaningful thing we could do with our lives. Changing ourselves and our togetherness, as we change the bigger picture. Join us as we figure this out- our great adventure”.
We also are going to be bringing creativity and play with our interactive and informative Walkabouts, an example would be the Activist Library, the Sandwich Board Collective, Democracy Anywhere and various skits that highlight the role of direct action and climate chaos. Through this we wish to have a presence throughout the festival and encourage conversation and reflection on some of the matters that really matter!
RisingUp!
Rising Up! is a collective of people holding different roles to make an organisation. Together Rising Up! aims to engage and empower members of the public to take effective, non-violent, fun direct action and civil disobedience. Rising Up! has a strategy developed from the study of international uprisings and system change, and now we want it here in the UK. Rising Up! uses a diversity of tactics (such as light and playful civil disobedience, chalk spray, stickering, dress up etc., to more hands on such as sit-ins, lock-ons, hunger strikes, prison sentences, etc.) and has already seen success in forcing two universities to agree to full divestment in the next five years, as well as fighting for workers’ rights, clean air for Londoners, anti-airport expansion and attending the front lines of the bank divestment/ anti-Fracking movements nationally and running several media campaigns including #toxicbankers #howtofakeademocracy etc.
Rising Up! has a unique structure in which self and community care is at its heart with a focus on nature connection, sustainable development and the true belief that every single person has the power, responsibility and passion to work together toward a shift from the unsustainable and unnatural system we now find ourselves in. It is clear that this shift needs a multitude of tactics and we want to awaken people to the varied possibilities, importance and pleasure in using Direct Action to work toward the change we know is rapidly approaching.
