Friday 11th August

Downstairs: The REconomy Centre presents…. A journey through local economic developments

Join is for this session on sustainable, fair, resilient and community-led economics. Learn what people are doing across the South West and get inspired to do something wonderful in your own backyard, too.  It’s all kicking off at 9:30am on Friday, Aug 11.

  • Hal Gillmore – Totnes REconomy Project – Hal will play host for this morning’s session, as well as sharing a bit about the development of the citizen-led development model merging in Totnes and the region, highlighting the Local Entrepreneur Forum, Reconomy Centre and Devon Convergence.
  • Ian Smith – Food Plymouth – Ian will share accomplishments and learnings on their journey to make Plymouth a more resilient and food secure city, including how they’re weaving networks and supporting new food enterprises. (They’re planning a Local Entrepreneur Forum.)
  • Gareth Mills – Red Brick Building, Glastonbury – The Red Brick Building is a great story of grass roots community development. Gareth will talk about the increasingly important role it plays as a key part of an emerging ‘enterprising ecosystem’. They’re a network hub, co-working space, and catalyst for community entrepreneurs. (They’re planning a Local Entrepreneur Forum, too.)
  • Chris Gunson – Torquay Community Economic Development Catalyst – Torbay is beginning to awake, at least in terms of grass roots economics. Chris is a key catalyst, weaving a network of actors to create the conditions for a new kind of community-oriented entrepreneurial culture, along with Torbay Community Development Trust, Unltd, and other players.
  • James Wood – Community Broker – James is one of the instigators of new initiative in Chagford. How do we get things started in a place? James will share his experience.
  • Jonathan Dawson – Schumacher College – Local economic initiatives can be effective, locally. But how can they be catalysts for larger scale systems change? Jonathan will discuss the connectivity of local, regional and national movements.

Saturday 12th August

Downstairs: Restorative Frome & The Frome Foundation present…. Systems of Social Change: Building a Restorative World

With Sophie Docker, Paul Kahawhatte, Maria Franchi and Michael Thomas

Not only what we think, but how we think about it is changing rapidly. Emerging themes of complexity and collaboration inform developing social technology but we are products of an old paradigm and without conscious examination only recreate the relationships and power structures we have been taught. This session is an exploration of how we can organise to support both the internal shifts and new possibilities for our communities. Through growing our muscle for collaboration with restorative tools and new systems of organisation. How can we create relationships and structures that we all consent to and operate with efficiency and inclusivity?
