Claudia Johnson

“Taking the opportunity to be creative is not an opportunity everyone takes as we may be more concerned with other daily tasks or not believe we have a creative side. Taking time to be playful with Art takes you outside your daily concerns and allows you to focus on something new. Clay feels so good in your hands and truly connects you to the earth. I believe Art can provide a platform between the subconscious and the conscious providing us with insights into our human nature, our dreams and our aspirations. Come take the time to be playful and messy and give yourself a bit of creative joy.

I look at the marks left on streets after years of people walking on them and the history held within them. I look at the formations of clouds and the patterns on bark. I look at the patches of lichen left on a wall or tree and all the other little bits of pattern you see in daily life but don’t always notice. I see them interweaving into each other, always growing and changing. Being an artist to me is about expressing your feelings towards the world, it’s about conveying what I see, into Art.”

Tatu Nikkanen

Tatu Nikkanen is a Finnish sculptor, painter and multi-media artist. Having lived and worked in Britain since 1991, he moved to Exeter 11 years ago, and has since been focusing his creative work mainly on his own playful version of contemporary religious folk art. Inspired by the ancient animistic faith of his native land, as well as the play and art of children, he carves and constructs Haltija (guardian or tutelary spirit) figures out of wood and other scrap materials found in the human and natural landscape.

Following old tradition, these carvings and dolls are considered ‘alive’, in their own particular way, and function as intermediaries between us human beings, the local spirits, and the greater archetypal forces of nature.
